Getting my hands dirty literally with charcoal, inks and coloured gesso creating textures and making marks. It’s a frustrating stage but so rewarding.

Tamil 2019
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

In 2015, Tamil fled Malaysia with her adopted sister due to religious persecution. On arrival in Australia, Tamil worked on a farm to survive and when the season finished, she came to Sydney where she came across The Salvation Army Church in Auburn. Pastors Paul and Robbin Moulds helped her settle and gave her enormous support with housing, training in new skills and in finding work.

She met her husband Darren Baker at the ‘Salvos’ Auburn and they were married there on 21 January 2018 surrounded by her new community. Her future plans include serving the community and also living a happy and fulfilling life in Australia.

This is Naw Esther
Naw Esther 2019
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

Naw Esther arrived in Australia in 1997 as humanitarian migrant from Sri Lanka, after having spent 7 years living in the refugee camps on the Burma/Thailand border. Naw Esther is a self-taught sewer and was unemployed for 17 years before being able to secure her first job as a part-time sewer with @thesocialoutfit in 2014.

Thanks to her incredible natural talent, passion and eye for detail, Esther quickly graduated to the position of senior sewing technician at The Social Outfit, working there full time until July 2020. Everyone absolutely adored her wonderful character and soft manners. Naw Esther is now busy looking after her seven children and her husband and is anticipating the birth of her 8th grandchild.

Naw Esther’s dream is to one day see peace and democracy between the people of Burma and their government. She is grateful for the opportunities she has been given in Australia.

Rebecca 2019
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

Rebecca was born in the Galang Refugee Camp, which from 1979 to 1996 accommodated Indochinese refugees on Galang Island in the Riau Islands of Indonesia. As a young girl of Vietnamese heritage, she joined her family to be settled in Australia, with the hope of finding freedom, opportunity and a better life. In later years, as a young single mother to two daughters, a difficult period in her life resulted in her seeking support to find accommodation and steady work.

During that time, a chance encounter with The Social Outfit changed Bec’s life. The organisation, which provides opportunities for migrant communities to learn about clothing production, design and marketing, sparked a deep love and passion for tailoring.

Bec is now working as a tailor for a prominent global brand. Her hopes and dreams are to keep sewing skills alive for future generations. Her goal is to teach the craft through learning workshops - providing the same opportunities to others that she herself has been given.

This is Haya. Painting is part of Settled/Unsettled showing at @magamnsw

Haya 2021
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

Haya arrived in Australia in 2019 from Saudi Arabia. It wasn't an easy journey; it took her a lot of traveling. A lot of waiting. A lot of running. A lot of hiding. At some point, it felt like coming to Australia was something rather impossible.

“I don’t want to go into details, but it was horrible, it was the two of us, me and my sister, against stronger powers. I still have nightmares of being sent back, where it's either death or a living hell that awaits me. But I'm happy to say that I fought patriarchy. Starting from a strict abusive family to a very corrupted system. I'm happy to say that I survived. I'm not just a victim. I'm a survivor. A fighter. And my fight will never end. I will still fight with my writings, hoping that my story will change something, and show the truth".

Haya came to Australia with her younger sister, both only 18 and 20 years old. They had a hard time settling in at first, exhausted from the journey and the wounds that it left. They had a lot to overcome, until they find their community and chosen family. Now after two years, Haya is working on her poetry and the book that she's writing about their story. She does ‘live poetry’ from time to time in various venues including at The Social outfit where she was part of the retail training program.

Haya is passionate about human rights, mental health, and social justice, and tries to convey that in her poetry by focusing on refugees and migrant issues.

Rage Becomes Her, 2022, oil on linen, 91x91cm
This painting draws its inspiration from the 2019 book by Soraya Chemaly (@sorayachemaly @ragebecomesher) by the same title. In the wake of the #MeToo movement Chemaly urges women to embrace their anger to harness it for lasting societal and personal change. Replacing sadness, shame and fear with directional anger can be an extremely positive and powerful tool to better the world, eradicate injustice and as a catalyst for change. Instead of resisting rage and being punished for expressing it I am in this painting encouraging the viewer to use this valuable emotion to fuel extraordinary achievements that otherwise would never get off the ground.

This is Naz @ninazan.jeb an incredible human who I This is Naz @ninazan.jeb an incredible human who I love dearly. Incredibly proud of her business @jebeli_au that aims to empower and employ other marginalised women. My life is so much richer for knowing you.
This is her story

Naz 2021
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

Naz came to Australia with her mother and younger brother in 2013 as refugees from Persia. In all these years, she experienced horrific things. “Sometimes I scream loud while I’m in silence. Sometimes I feel numb cause carrying all these traumas are so painful that I can’t handle it anymore”.

Naz was studying dentistry, but life changed her destination to something else as she thinks that she is not the same person anymore. She is an entrepreneur and designer and started her own brand. “Life taught me how unpredictable it can be so I want to follow things that give me joy in life, and I can share that with the community”. Despite the challenges of being a refugee in Australia at the moment, Naz hopes to create a world-renowned fashion business that will employ other marginalised women.

Spring is coming

Springs have come and gone for years and years but for me…
Spring is just a dream
An inaccessible dream
I am stuck in the longest autumn of my life
Stuck for years and years…
When are my yellowish leaves of hope going to be green?
When are my birds going to sing again?
Till when will the clouds of my eyes rain down?
Till when will the sun of my life hide behind darkest clouds of thought?
For years and years
I was waiting for an answer
Trying to remember how spring feels
Hoping for…
Heh
Forget it
Spring is coming.

This is beautiful Shiva (@shiva_dress_designer ) w This is beautiful Shiva (@shiva_dress_designer ) who I met theough the @thesocialoutfit, one of the amazing sitters in Settled/Unsettled currently showing at the @magamnsw

Shiva 2019
oil on linen, 180 x 180cm

Shiva, originally from Iran, arrived in Australia with her husband in 2013. She does not wish to talk about the past.

Since arriving in Australia Shiva started studying fashion technology at TAFE in late 2013. Her studies were interrupted by the birth of her beautiful son in 2015. Shiva's first employment was as a sewing technician with The Social Outfit. From there, she went on to teaching sewing classes in Western Sydney to women of new migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Shiva is very ambitious and courageous. She always comes up with ideas and dreams big. Now that she has finally completed her studies at TAFE and done some work experience, Shiva believes she has gained enough knowledge to open her own business.

Shiva aspires to be a fashion entrepreneur and create jobs for talented women who might face barriers to employment but want to become independent and confident. She wants to support mothers who spend their whole lives caring for their families but are left with little to do once their children grow up. She believes that keeping busy making beautiful designs makes people happy.

Shiva is grateful to Australia for accepting her into this paradise.
