As part of our Collection 100 centenary celebrations during 2024, we’ve invited four fabulous artists represented in the MAG&M collection to present a masterclass.

Come join Kathrin Longhurst for the second session in this superb drawing masterclass series.

@kathrinlonghurst will lead participants in a session focused on portraiture, with a life model for inspiration. Delve into her process of creating an empowering yet intimate portrait in this intensive workshop in which she’ll share unique insights and key techniques.

Please bring all your own materials.

Repost • @maitlandregionalartgallery The face of migrant and refugee Australia is diverse and complex, as Kathrin Longhurst brings to bear in her stunning series of portraits for the exhibition Settled/Unsettled currently on display at MRAG. “In 2015, Tamil fled Malaysia with her adopted sister due to religious persecution. On arrival in Australia, Tamil worked on a farm to survive and when the season finished, she came to Sydney where she came across The Salvation Army Church in Auburn. Pastors Paul and Robbin Moulds helped her settle and gave her enormous support with housing, training in new skills and in finding work.
She met her husband Darren Baker at the ‘Salvos’ Auburn and they were married there on 21 January 2018 surrounded by her new community. Her future plans include serving the community and also living a happy and fulfilling life in Australia.”

Posted @withregram • @artguideau The women in Kathrin Longhurst’s paintings tell a story of bold defiance. Among them you will find the adventurer, the trailblazer, and the fighter, but no wallflower. “All through art history we’ve had men painting women as decorative objects,” she says. “[I’m] reclaiming that domain of painting women, and painting them in a way that is empowering, where other women can relate and see themselves. Because what you can’t see you can’t be.”

‘Women to the Front’ at Flinders Lane Gallery coincides with International Women’s Day, and Longhurst hopes the audience will take away “a renewed interest in womens’ stories, recognising their resilience and their strength. And celebrating them for their incredible contributions to society”.

Very humbling to have my work referenced in a research paper and published in a journal halfway across the world by Chilean Dr Leopoldo Tillería Aqueveque, Ph.D. The article appeared this week in the magazine Comunicación & Hombre (WOS index ), from the Francisco de Vittoria University of Madrid.
