A few behind the scenes images from my first sculptures. It’s been a long journey but so worthwhile.
From my artist statement:
The series presents bronze figures of female fighters, their forms darkened by a ferric nitrate patina, standing atop industrial, brutalist metal plinths. These figures—a nod to Longhurst’s earlier heroines—represent freedom fighters, agitators, and survivors. We meet once again familiar personas like Flag Girl, Grenade Girl, and Pilot Girl, now re-imagined in a darker tone, as beacons of resistance and reminders of vulnerability.

Cacotopia is part of a body of work called Dystopia and will be shown at @galleryone_art starting next week

About the works:
In Dystopia, Longhurst’s latest series, she confronts the personal and global anxieties that shape her view of an uncertain future. Through a stark palette and raw, uncompromising forms, she explores themes of resilience and disillusionment, evoking a world on the brink of collapse.
In Cacotopia (see above), the background reveals a dystopian landscape ravaged by war or environmental collapse, evoking the grim worlds of Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World. Here, a young, fragile woman in military uniform is poignantly juxtaposed against the scene’s desolation, underscoring themes of vulnerability amidst catastrophe.

We’re thrilled to announce that ‘Respect’, generously donated by renowned Australian artist @kathrinlonghurst, will be auctioned off at our upcoming Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony in support of the Romero Centre!

Kathrin Longhurst is a multi-time Archibald Prize finalist whose work draws inspiration from her early life in East Germany. She takes a deep interest in the journeys of other women, and seeks to foreground the importance of their struggles in her work, with a view to avoiding the repetition of past mistakes. Her commitment to asylum seeker justice is evident in her contributions to the Settled/Unsettled exhibition, which explores migrant and refugee experiences. Kathrin won the Archibald Packing Room Prize in 2022 with a stunning portrait of Kate Ceberano and was recently announced as a finalist in the 2024 Portia Geach Memorial Award.

Portia Geach 2024. So thrilled.

The subject of this painting “Imminent Threat” is @midori_goto_ who personifies every woman’s experience living in a patriarchal society. The painting offers commentary on male violence and aggression towards women and how it affects our psyche. The painting shows Midori standing against a MiG-31, a powerful Russian aircraft. The plane looms close, exposing its underbelly, as a reminder of the constant threats of violence and aggression stemming from toxic masculinity and patriarchal power structures.
Additionally this work touches on the broader brutality of war that affects many parts of the world and women in particular. It is estimated that 70% of people killed in Gaza for example are women and children. But it also reflects on personal battles women fight every day, making life feel like a never-ending struggle. Midori, dressed in a pilot suit and flight goggles, is preparing herself for the approaching danger, ready for the next battle.
