Last Sunday, we celebrated the official opening of Burrinja’s 4th instalment of Women Painting Women, a powerful exhibition showcasing award-winning female artists from Victoria, NSW, and WA. With over 150 attendees, including some of the artists themselves, it was an inspiring afternoon of storytelling and connection.

Don’t miss this stunning celebration of realist portraiture – from now until Sunday, 9 March.

We got a first look inside and are beyond excited to share it with you!

On February 6, 2025, the Bennett-Schmidt Pavilion opens, doubling the size of the Muskegon Museum of Art.

This major expansion adds five new galleries, education studios, a sculpture park, and more—bringing even more art out of storage and onto the walls.

The historic wing will now fully showcase the museum’s permanent collection, and dedicates a gallery to the museum’s glass art collection.

Take a look inside with this video, then plan your visit and be part of Muskegon’s exciting new chapter in the arts!

This is probably my favourite painting I created d

This is probably my favourite painting I created during this year if I had to pick one. Working with @goompi_ugerabah was so special and I am so grateful to have him in my life. Thank you for trusting me and thank you for your friendship.
A proud tribal man, Goompi descends from strong female ancestors, two of whom were placed on the Pialba mission upon European settlement. His family has lived on Minjungbal tribal land, while Goompi was born on Kombumerri tribal land on the Gold Coast, QLD, where he has spent his life. Taught in his early teens by the very few local elders who had cultural knowledge, including his Nunukal skin fathers. Goompi began to practice the written language with permission (Aboriginal art) where he depicted stories of his teachers and homeland. Doing this for 24 years now as an artist, he continues to represent tribal stories and knowledge through the collage of dot patterns, ancient symbolism and fine line work in each canvas he creates.

From the catalogue :
Furthermore we see paintings that show abstract flags and shadowy crowds, suggesting moments of social and political tension, perhaps a May Day demonstration or a populist rally, where extreme rhetoric stirs unrest. In these scenes, Longhurst addresses how easily rights fought for over generations can be swept away, especially impacting women and marginalised communities as societal divides deepen.

A few behind the scenes images from my first sculptures. It’s been a long journey but so worthwhile.
From my artist statement:
The series presents bronze figures of female fighters, their forms darkened by a ferric nitrate patina, standing atop industrial, brutalist metal plinths. These figures—a nod to Longhurst’s earlier heroines—represent freedom fighters, agitators, and survivors. We meet once again familiar personas like Flag Girl, Grenade Girl, and Pilot Girl, now re-imagined in a darker tone, as beacons of resistance and reminders of vulnerability.

Cacotopia is part of a body of work called Dystopia and will be shown at @galleryone_art starting next week

About the works:
In Dystopia, Longhurst’s latest series, she confronts the personal and global anxieties that shape her view of an uncertain future. Through a stark palette and raw, uncompromising forms, she explores themes of resilience and disillusionment, evoking a world on the brink of collapse.
In Cacotopia (see above), the background reveals a dystopian landscape ravaged by war or environmental collapse, evoking the grim worlds of Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World. Here, a young, fragile woman in military uniform is poignantly juxtaposed against the scene’s desolation, underscoring themes of vulnerability amidst catastrophe.
